Whether you’re wanting to look your best for fast-approaching parties, been stuck in overheated rooms, sun-battered or just plain knackered, we all need a bit of facial TLC every once in a while.

The skincare gurus on our list advocate high-tech machines such as high intensity focused ultrasounds, skin-healing properties from gemstones or the “skin dance” Buccal massage for an event-worthy glow. Here, Nana Asia exfoliates and reveals the truth that lies beneath these cutting-edge facial treatments.

Shine like a star: Gemstone Facial at Elu Spa

It will come as no surprise that as people are investing in their skin like never before, the gemstone facial tool market is booming. Gemstones no longer just belong around your neck or on your side table. The new place to put them is your face. While these fascinating rocks are considered an “alternative treatment”, gemstones are fast becoming incorporated into facials to promote beauty and revive energy.

How it works: Knowing the long-standing reputation that Eminence has for great products, it’s their use of gemstones that made us decide to give this facial a whirl. The treatment begins with cleansing and exfoliating using Hungarian massage techniques using a suited skin serum based on skin type.

Up next was the hot jade stone massage that withdraws the toxins from the skin improving blood circulation and making the skin more translucent. Then, the jade rollers go over certain acupressure points which help increase lymphatic drainage. Lastly, and probably the best part of it, was the rose quartz gemstone mask made of actual crystals that puts a comfortable pressure onto the skin leaving facial muscles more relaxed.

While rose quartz is said to work by dispelling negative energy, allowing positive ones to flow in, the jade and amethyst has amazing healing properties as well due to their energy, frequency and vibration.

Plump up slack skin: HIFU Fasciology at Bella Marie France

Oxidative stress is one reason to blame for signs of premature ageing; damaging free radicals reduces the skin’s ability to repair itself properly. The breakthrough? High intensity focused ultrasounds (HIFU) facials are an interesting tech innovation as they rebalance our skin’s immune system and boost the natural defence barrier.

How it works: Bella believes that true beauty begins from within which is why it addresses the fascia with a deep lymphatic massage – which releases muscle tension, usually around the jawline and neck, preventing optimal circulation – a key step before the treatment.

Using ultrasound energy to successfully stimulate every layer of the skin, it encourages the production of collagen and elastin while improving skin texture. BMF believes that true beauty begins from within which is why it addresses the fascia with a deep lymphatic massage – which releases muscle tension, usually around the jawline and neck, preventing optimal circulation – a key step before the treatment.

Using ultrasound energy to successfully stimulate every layer of the skin, it encourages the production of collagen and elastin while improving skin texture. Hearing this, I was ready to discover the cheekbones I never knew I had. The certified technician steadily manoeuvres the device and delivers “shots” across the planes of my face, including around my checks and near the jawline.

But thankfully, it was hardly painful, and I could even chat happily with the therapist as the treatment progressed. I discovered that she’d be using handheld device of four varying wavelengths that have the ability to deliver energy to different depths of your skin layers. To my surprise, the shadows from the side of my nose to the corners of my mouth (aka laugh lines) were significantly lightened, my jowl and chin area also felt tighter and a look at my side profile in the mirror revealed a more prominent jawline.

Beat seasonal breakouts: Laser Light Treatment at Skin Laundry

The glare of bright lights at parties, the use of HD cameras and layers of cosmetics can often leave the skin begging for a rescue remedy. By preserving the good bacteria in the skin’s microbiome, we can ensure optimal immune functioning of the skin.

How it works: Pulse-triggered lasers target dirt, oil in the pores, residual makeup and pigmentation like melasma (those brownish-gray patches that come with spending time in the sun). In some spots, like around the corners of my nose and my hairline, the laser got what the technician called “extra clicky”.

The extra clicking, or pulsing of the laser, I was told, is indicative of areas of congestion or extra pigment. Sure enough, these are areas that are typically more prone to breakouts. The laser works by stimulating the underlying dermal layer of skin, which kicks collagen production and elastin into gear.

The laser targets pigment, like the brown spots from sun damage, fragmenting it and allowing the body to absorb and metabolize it. This high-power pulse light tightens pores, gets rid of uneven skin tone and treats broken capillaries around the eye areas – all within 15 minutes.

Hydrate deeply for a dewy epidermis: Red Carpet Facial at Flawless

Skin-healing solutions, like hyaluronic acid, are swiftly becoming beauty staples. Hyaluronic acid is something of a savior in skincare and is consistently raved about by experts and dermatologists for its hydrating properties; it can hold 1,000 times its own weight in moisture!

How it works: This facial blends together a flawless fusion of hyperbaric oxygen technology and Intraceuticals rejuvenate serum to immediately infuse the skin with a much-needed boost of youth while stimulating collagen production and increasing cellular respiration.

Like a blast of cold air on the skin, the infusing is followed by a topical serum (a process Intraceuticals calls “hyaluronic layering”). The theory of the facial is that pressurized oxygen speeds the skin’s absorption of moisturizing agents like hyaluronic acid (a carbohydrate that attracts water).

My skin appeared plumper and more hydrated thanks to the cosmeceutical ingredients such as low molecular weight hyaluronic acid, vitamins A, C and E, aloe vera and green tea. This treatment is ideal for those who wish to have the wow factor minus the downtime associated with big result treatments.

Go all natural for that lit-from-within glow: Buccal Facial at Sense of Touch

Whether we consider ourselves “skintellectual” or are simply curious, questioning the science of the facial we’re buying into is the new norm. As customers are becoming increasingly savvy about plant active ingredients and natural massage techniques, they are refusing to accept things at face value just because it’s a revolutionary treatment to which Duchess of Sussex Meghan Markle’s owes her trademark glow.

How it works: No machines, no tools, no stones. Yes, you heard that right! And to top it off, it uses Comfort Zone’s Sublime Range with hero ingredients such as gooseberry, vitamin C and peptides. The first few steps of cleaning, toning, exfoliating and steaming lead to the real treat: the skin dance.

There’s slapping and there’s tapping and there’s all sorts of dancing moves right on the skin. It’s almost like cardio for your skin! Offering lymphatic drainage and sculpting, the massage therapist’s hands work on all the angles of the face, even inside the mouth to fix the tension around the jawline.

It might not be the most relaxing massage you’ll ever receive, but the sculpting results are phenomenal; one thing guaranteed is that you’ll emerge with skin worthy of second glances.

Peel to reveal a fresher face: Diamond Treatment at Melomist

Pollution is a big aggressor for the skin and has been linked to clogged pores and uneven skin tones. These dirt particles’ tiny size – sometimes as many as 20 times smaller than pores – allows them to infiltrate deeper layers of the epidermis, causing not only inflammation and dehydration but a cellular-level reaction that leads to lost elasticity and firmness. With global pollution levels on the rise, the trend for microdermabrasion diamond peels + electroporation looks set to continue in 2020.

How it works: In a nutshell, Melomist’s microdermabrasion diamond peel is a non-invasive treatment that uses its diamond tip to loosen and remove the uppermost layer of dead skin cells. When you remove the uppermost layer, it helps to stimulate collagen growth to reveal new healthier skin cells.

This treatment is followed by electroporation to infuse skin with minerals, oxygen and hyaluronic acid in hopes of alleviating dry skin (and many other skin conditions) without disrupting the natural pH levels.

The best part is that the resultant pores are only temporary – staying open only long enough to get your skin the goodness it truly deserves, continuing to work its magic once the electrical field is shut down. A bonus of opening pores? It helps to remove those pesky blackheads and whiteheads!
