Whether you’re grabbing a quick bite in your favourite neighbourhood spot or meeting up with friends in town, it’s always nice to look cute. But let’s be real: we just can’t be bothered to put together an outfit beforehand all the time. The million dollar question is probably how to look cute with minimal effort. And our answer is this: Basics!

Having basic items at the ready can be a lifesaver. These pieces are sure to have your back for your next business lunch as well as a casual date with your boo. Without further ado, these are the top 6 basic items that we think you should always have in your closet!

Plain White Tee

Sorry, we’re not talking about the band. But we think Delilah would agree that a plain white t-shirt is the most essential wardrobe basic. There’s just something so simple about a white tee that it can go with almost anything. Layer a tee like this Ultimate Organic Cotton T-shirt by ASOS under a lace cami or bustier for a casual but feminine look. The perfect white tee is different for everyone. Whether the fit, the length or the neck, it’s all up to you. Getting the most wear out of your tee is the most important thing, so consider investing in a high quality tee that will last you a good while. Something like this 90s Ribbed Cap Sleeve Tee by Re/Done will look great on its own with a pair of jeans.

LBD

This was an easy pick. Every girl needs a little black dress in their closet. Period. A black mini dress can be worn for almost every occasion: work, date, night out, anything. We love everything about this Cady Mini Dress from Versace’s SS20 collection (maybe except the price tag :/). The tailored fit and the gold button detail are absolutely gorgeous. The LBD can be dressed up or down with heels or sneakers. You can further dress down your dress with an oversized cardigan. Mini dresses with an open square neckline are in trend, just like this satin Milkmaid Mini Dress by Motel. Accessorise with dangling earrings or layering necklaces for extra bling!

Blazer

Blazers aren’t just a part of business attire, it can also transform an outfit! Always keep a blazer around for changing seasons. Wear a blazer like this Capsule Double Breasted Blazer by & Other Stories over a mini dress and you’ve got yourself a trendy autumn ensemble. Channel your inner girl boss by going all out with a pant suit! If you’re not a fan of a weighty wool blazer, go for one made with a blend of cotton and linen, like REMAIN Birger Christensen’s Debbie blazer. Top tip: style your blazer with boots. You can never go wrong with this combination!

Jeans

Finding ‘the’ jeans that fit your waist, wraps your butt nicely without suffocating your thighs are 👏🏼 a 👏🏼 struggle. But they are such a significant item in our wardrobe: you’ll automatically reach for them if you don’t know what to wear. Invest in really good denim, because you’ll want them to last. While styles like ripped and boot cut jeans are all the craze, we recommend a classic straight ankle length jean for the most versatility. This BDG High Waisted Slim Straight Jean by Urban Outfitters can look super cute with a sweater or a crop top. Or try out a vintage look with these 1997 Trash Straight Jean by Acne Studios and a leather aviator jacket. Your perfect pair of jeans could turn out to be the backbone of your wardrobe!

Heels

We can’t expect you to leave the house barefoot, right? A pair of heels are the ultimate pair of shoes to dress up any outfit. Jeans and a T-shirt, LBD…Slip on a pair of heels and boom! You look like you’re ready to take on the world. Comfort should be the main thing to think about here. Your go to pair of heels shouldn’t have to be in four-inch heels! These GU Marshmallow Pointed Pumps look super stylish with tan trousers and a white sweatshirt. Another option for comfort is going for a block heel. Pair leather shorts and an oversized blazer with these Viva pumps – an updated fashion classic from Salvatore Ferragamo.

White Sneakers

We’re ending this list with a street style staple. Sneakers, as we all know, aren’t just for sports or the gym anymore. It does the exact opposite of heels – it’s here to make your outfit more casual. Nike’s Air Force 1 is a natural choice to recommend, it goes with literally everything! Wide leg jeans and high waisted shorts are a no brainer combo with these kicks. Juxtaposing the chunky sneaker with a feminine skirt is also an option. If you don’t like the thick sole of AF-1’s, go for a classic tennis shoe! Pair a silk skirt with these classic Superga 2750 trainers, they’re so comfy and lightweight that it’s perfect for travel!
