Ahhh summer. The season of cute crop tops, bikinis, and oh wait… that’s right. It’s also the season where women feel the most pressure to get into shape. With the change of fashion season and as the temperature increases day by day, summer is the time to show off a little more skin. But having said that, this could lead to feeling a bit more self-conscious in their body. Although our mantra is to love our body in all of its glory, there’s no shame in trying to look our best.
When we heard about Emsculpt, a new body-contouring treatment that is essentially supposed to give you the effect of 20,000 sit-ups in 30 minutes, we just had to check it out! We visited the new High Society Skin Clinic in Mong Kok to test for ourselves whether the Emsculpt is effective or not!
How does it work?
What makes Emsculpt so unique is that it is not only about eliminating fat. Unlike other body contouring machines which aim to reduce fat, the Emsculpt is a procedure that allows the building of muscle simultaneous to burning fat. The Emsculpt machine can be used on the stomach for a more toned look or on the buttocks for a nonsurgical booty-lift treatment.
While this sounds too good to be true, the science it’s backed by science which holds a lot of validity. The High Intensity Focused Electromagnetic Energy (HIFEM) technique is used to stimulate muscle work and burn fat without pain. This technology induces powerful muscle contractions in which the muscle tissue is forced to adapt to the stimulated extreme condition. Ultimately the muscle tissue responds with a deep re-modeling of its inner structure to help improve muscle tone and sculpt your body.
The procedure was very straightforward with no downtime involved. When I arrived at High Society Skin Clinic, I filled in a form of health conditions to make sure I was eligible for the Emsculpt. After that, it’s straight to getting toned. I decided to get the Emsculpt on my stomach as it was an area that I wanted to look more toned for the summer. The Emsculpt machine is a very high-tech gadget with touch screens reminiscent of something that would soon become a norm in a futuristic world. I lied onto the bed and two paddles were strapped onto my stomach using a Velcro belt. Then it was time to begin.
The feeling of Emsculpt is hard to describe but how it works is very much similar to a HIIT workout. Throughout the session, there are periods of intense pulling and vacuuming sensation followed by mild pulses which soothe the muscles. This cycle is repeated over the course of 30 minutes. At first, I felt an intense shock in my lower abdomen but only for a few minutes at a time. My body soon got used to the sensation and it was smooth sailing from thereon. Intensity can be adjusted but seeing as it was my first time, I decided to take it easy and set it to 50% then gradually to 80%. The feeling was alien and at sometimes (during high-intensity intervals) felt like cramping it was distracting enough for me to not check my phone, making it the perfect pick-me-up and exercise session for busy office ladies who can come get this treatment in a jiffy during their lunch break or after work hours.
Results & verdict
After my session, I felt no pain at all. I had initially expected some sort of soreness around my abdominal area (I mean I did technically do 20,000 sit-ups in 30 minutes), but to my pleasant surprise, I just felt a bit of firmness on the stomach, as if you’re tensing your abs but while simultaneously relaxing – it’s an odd feeling or a placebo effect. After one session, the physical results were not as drastic as I initially imagined but I did notice during the day and even the week that I felt less bloated. Even after a heavy carby meal at Carbone my usual stomach pooch was non-existent!
Overall, I can understand that if you were to consistently undergo Emsculpt you will be able to achieve your desired tones in a matter of few procedures. It is recommended to have the treatment two times per week for two weeks. I think it’s a great way to kickstart a healthy lifestyle and if you’re looking for that post-workout tight muscles – without the soreness – Emsculpt will become your new holy grail.
